Servicing a Motorcycle for New Riders
Life on Two Wheels Instruction Necessities Motorcycle Course
Service Description
Ok, now you have your Class 6 and have found your first motorcycle! The excitement of having your first bike is an addictive feeling, knowing that you can jump onto the bike at any time you want. The experiences you have on your bike leave you in a state of euphoria and you catch yourself saying "Why didn't I do this years ago?" But now comes the next most important part. You must take care of the motorcycle! Fresh oil, fresh oil filter, clean air filter, quality spark plugs. The care a motorcycle needs is the same as what any other vehicle requires, but the care is even more important on a motorcycle. Bikes have very simple mechanics that require dilligent care to avoid an unwelcomed break-down on the side of a highway. At the end of the day, your motorcycle is an investment. Why not protect that investment abnd avoid costly repairs? Every make and model of motorcycle has different servicing intervals, but the requirements are all basically the same. Fresh oil to keep the moving parts in the engine lubricated. A fresh oil filter to collect the gunk from the oil, making your oil work more efficiently. A fresh air filter to ensure no road grime is mixing with your fuel in the cylinders. Have a liquid cooled bike? How old is the coolant, and it still working the way it should? Are there quality spark plugs to have the cleanest burn possible in the cylider heads? All of these things should be changed and inspected regularly according to your bikes service manual. And then there is the dreaded "End of Riding Season" for everyone. The bike is going to be parked for a few months and it needs to be winterized properly. Yes, there are multiple dealerships around the area that will do these basic services for you. Most dealerships have a labor rate averaging around $150/hr, plus or minus $20 depending on the shop. Some dealerships will have a servicing package that is a flat rate for a basic oil and oil filter change, but anything beyond that you are looking at more money out of your pocket and into their business. However... What if you could learn to take care of your bike without having to go into a dealership? Many of these basic servicing requirements on a motorcycle are foreign to new riders, and some aren't sure where to start. If you need help servicing your bike, let me show you how right in my garage! Prices will vary depending on bike make and model, and what needs to be done to it. Bring your own supplies, or I can source them for you.
